We Have Chair Covers

This morning, Zac and I had a meeting at Maty's Chair Covers to discuss color choices and fabric options for our reception chair covers. It seems to funny to have a meeting about such things but different colors really do change the look of the space so we had a meeting. We decided to have white covers so that we can add a little color with the sashes and not overwhelm the space. Our choices for sashes were between satin and organza fabrics. Though we liked the look of a satin sash better than the organza ones, they only had yellow sashes available in organza, so that's what we chose. Our table linens and chair covers are white so the yellow will add a nice springtime color for our May wedding. So our chairs will be a yellow version of the ones pictured below.

We thought the overlay on the table pictured above is really pretty and goes with our color scheme, but opted not to do overlays. There was also the decision of draping. Maty's has done several weddings at our venue and they carry the materials to add drapery over the head table (seen in the picture below). It looks nice but we don't think it's necessary. The venue is pretty enough without it.

We are thinking of doing some drapery on the aisle... more on that later.

Ribbon Wands

This week is a week of projects. The first on my list is getting the ribbon wands done. I started them last week and I really like the way they're turning out. I went to Wal Mart and Michael's Craft Store to get an assortment of yellow, white, and grey ribbon. They varied in width, texture, and shade.

We found long wooden dowels at Michael's Craft Store and Zac helped me cut them into 8" sticks. I cut the ribbon into strips that were slightly longer than the wooden dowels. Then came the gluing. To make sure that each wand was different I randomly chose ribbons of different colors and attached them to the dowels. Each wand had between 4 and 6 ribbons. I "sealed" the ribbons on the wand by gluing a small strip of white ribbon around the glued ribbons.

I've only completed about 10 of these little guys, so I have my work cut out for me. It's a simple project though, and now that all the ribbon and dowels have been cut the process should go much quicker.

In other project news, I've started working on our wedding invitations. This summer we found and ordered materials for pocketfold invitations. Since then I have been working on the invitation wording and I've finally come up with something that is fun and perfect for our invitations. This week I will be working on assembling the invitations and designing the inserts and RSVP cards. Once they are all put together and mailed out I'll post the details. (Gotta let our guests have a little surprise when the invitation arrives.)

I also plan to finish working on the flip flops for our guests during the reception. I started that project during the summer and I only have a few more flip flops to tie together and label. I also need to create a framed sign to go along with the flip flops to let our guests know they are welcome to take a pair.

Once my projects are complete I'll be sure to post all about them.

Meanwhile, today is December 4th.....which means we have only 5 more months until the big day! Time flies!

Feather Hairpiece

Earlier this week I decided it was time to get work on my feather headpiece. I pictured something with feathers and rhinestones; nothing too big or flashy. I was thinking of a smaller version of this feather headpiece I found here on etsy.com:

...or something like this headpiece found here :

So I gathered up my supplies and got to work.

I purchased a pack of white feathers from Wal-Mart for $1.48 (You can also find similar packs at Joann's Fabrics or Michael's Craft Store.)

I found these small crystals at Joann's Fabrics for just over $2.

This wire hair comb was also found at Joann's Fabrics for around $1.50.

The last thing I needed to work on this project was a little bit of white felt. I got one sheet of felt for just $0.25 at Wal-Mart.

The first step was to cut out a circle out of the felt. I used the bottle cap from a jug of juice to trace a circle on the felt.

Next I cut out the circle. This was used as the base of the hairpiece.

The bag of feathers I bought was green on the outside so I couldn't tell the size of the feathers until I opened the bag. The feathers ended up being longer than I needed, so I cut each one in half.

After the feathers were cut in half, I started glueing them to the circle of felt. I slightly overlapped each new feather over the last one I had glued down. Once a full circle had been made, I began cutting the feathers shorter and started another circle.

After all of the feathers were in place, I noticed that the hairpiece was a little too flat. To fix the problem, I used a needle and thread to sinch the felt circle together in the middle. This pinched together the piece and made it look a little more full.

The next step was the attach the wire hair comb. I used the needle and thread once more to sew the comb to the felt. After making sure the the comb was attached firmly, I glued a few more small feathers to the back of the hairpiece. This was just to make sure that the felt circle was covered and couldn't bee seen once the clip was put in place in my hair.

The last step was to attach the crystals to the center of the piece using a few drops of hot glue.

I LOVE the way the feather hairpiece came out. It was the perfect size; it made a statement without being too big. I was really happy with my finished project....

...unfortunately, I made a little crafty mistake. I got so eager to complete my project that I neglected to compare the color of the feathers to the color of my dress. The colors are a little off. It's not a huge difference, but it is noticeable. It's a little disappointing but it was such an inexpensive project that it's really no big deal. I'm going to check at Joann's to see if they carry feathers in a different shade. As for this feather hairpiece, it was a good practice project. Perhaps one of the girls in my Bridey group will like it and want to use it. If not perhaps one of my lovely readers will want to use it at their wedding.

It's A Boy!

Last month I mentioned in this post that Zac's cousin Scott and his wife, Amy, are expecting. Right before Thanksgiving, they were able to find out the sex of their little one. It's a boy! Scott and Amy are super excited to meet their new little son, Tyler David Bennett in just four and a half more months. I'm sure our handsome nephew, Grayson, will be happy to have another little guy around to play with.

 Congratulations again you two!

In other baby news, my friend and coworker, Sandy, just went on maternity leave. She is also expecting a little boy. Blake should be arriving in just a few weeks. Since I won't be seeing her at work for a while, Sandy (who reads this blog often) has asked that I be sure to update frequently so that she can keep up with what's going on. So a little shoutout to Sandy: Hi girl! Love and miss you. Can't wait to meet little Blake.

We Hired A Videographer

For months now Zac and I have been going back and forth about hiring a videographer. Though it was something that we both thought would be great to have for years to come, it came at a price we weren't sure that we could afford. We've gone over the budget numerous times, made sure that we had all of our major vendors covers, saved our pennies, researched videographers (again, and again...and again), and recently we realized that hiring a videographer was something we would be able to do.

During our research, we watched more videos than we could count, and contacted a few companies to check on their rates. You might recall from this post that the videographer who caught our attention the most was Ahwahnee Films. An ex co-worker of ours was in a wedding earlier this year that Ahwahnee Films captured. Here is the highlights film from John and Brooke's big day.

After seeing this video we contacted Aaron Mendez of Ahwahnee Films back in July to get an idea of his rates. We talked back and forth through email for a little while and he was very understanding when I told him that Zac and I had a few things to take care of (like our dj and cake order) before we could commit to hiring him to film our wedding. As soon as it seemed possible to hire a videographer, we contacted Aaron.

Zac and I met with Aaron last Friday. Aaron and his family live in Orange County, but they were going to be in Yosemite for a few days. Zac and I drove to Oakhurst to meet up with Aaron, talk details, and get to know one another over some Starbuck's. It was Aaron's suggestion that we meet up; he likes to get to know the couples he films before their wedding day. Zac and I thought this was a great idea. It was so nice talking with Aaron. We spent about an hour hanging out and chatting, only some of which was about the actual details of the day. We told Aaron about how we met and he told us about his cute little twin girls. We also learned that he and his wife are expecting again. *Congratulations to the growing Mendez family!*

Zac and I walked away from the experience feeling great about our decision to hire Aaron to film our wedding. He was such a nice guy, we felt comfortable around him (so spending our wedding day with him should be fun), and we love his work. In addition to filming our big day, Aaron will also be attending our rehearsal and rehearsal dinner the night before. We're excited to see the creative way Aaron decides to compile it.

158 more days to go!
*I love watching.....okay ....more like REwatching Aaron's work. The vows in this video always get me.....so sweet!*

I'm Back!

After an unexpected (and unwanted) 3 week blogging hiatus, I'm back! Three weeks ago, my computer froze, shut off, and refused to turn back on. Thankfully my older brother, Michael, is a computer genius and was able to fix it.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Zac and I had a great day eating dinner with his family at his grandparents' house. His sister, Sarah was able to fly in from Vegas with her husband Donnie, and our adorable nephew Grayson. It was Grayson's first Thanksgiving and we were happy that we were able to share it with him. Look at this adorable little onesie that his mama made for him.

It was our Jim's first Thanksgiving, too, though he had a less enjoyable experience. While taking her evening medication, Zac's grandmother dropped one of her pills. Jim swooped in and licked it down before anyone had the chance to stop him. Since he is such a little guy we were afraid of what might happen to him. Thankfully we were able to call the 24 hour pet emergency hotline. They told us that we would have to make Jim throw up by giving him hyrogen peroxide and that he would be fine. Much easier said than done. Jim might be small but he is quite a fiesty little thing. In the end it took three of us to hold him down, keep his mouth open and give him the hydrogen peroxide. I felt so bad for the little guy. He had no idea why we were doing this to him. He fought and he fought hard. I also felt horrible for Zac's dad who got a few puncture wounds from Jim's sharp teeth. Eventually he got enough down and he threw up everything. He's doing much better.

Last night, Zac and I went to his cousin Kevin's wedding. We had a lot of fun with his family and I can't believe that I didn't take any pictures. It was a beautiful outdoor ceremony that took place at sunset. The bride, Tessa, was absolutely stunning. They had this fantastic video at the beginning of the reception. Their videographer interviewed them both sometime before the wedding and put together something for the guests to watch while the bridal party took photos.

In the last three weeks the girls and I had another Bridey night, Zac and I hired a videographer(!!!), I set up an appointment to look over chair cover and sash colors, I started work on the ribbon wands, I made a feather and rhinestone hairpiece, and Scott and Amy found out the sex of their baby.

Needless to say there will be many more posts coming. I'm glad to be back!

Plus One-s and Children

I've been a little under the weather this week which is why I've been absent. I'm starting to feel a little better and hopefully will be fully recovered by tomorrow for the fourth edition of Bridey Night. :) The girls will all be coming to my house tomorrow night for some more wedding planning and chit chat.

At the last Bridey Night, the big topic of conversation was the issue of children and plus ones on the guest list. None of the brides in attendance were looking to have a few hundred people at their weddings, but realized that the guest list is a sensitive subject. Nobody wants to leave family members and old friends feeling left out.

Zac and I discussed our guest list pretty early on. We needed to get a rough estimate of a guest count so that we could see what our venue budget would need to look like. After reviewing the list and going over costs we made the decision that we could not be including children in our big day plans. It's not that we don't love little ones, its just that since we both have big families, and friends with kids, including all these children significantly increased our guest count to a number we weren't comfortable with. So we opted to make our wedding an adult only occasion. Plus we think our parent friends would enjoy a night to cut loose and party with us, though we hope that finding babysitters won't be an issue.

We also decided to mnimize plus ones. Though traditionally, all single guests should be given a plus one on their invite, Zac and I decided that our wedding was not the time to meet people for the first time. We figured that a wedding is a time to spend with people you know and love; family and friends that are a part of your lives. Those people are already getting an invite so there is no need for additional plus ones.

Not everyone will agree with our decision to minimize our guest count but we hope that all in attendance will have a great time.

Having trouble finalizing your guest list? Dealing with the issue of plus ones and children? What did you decide? I'd love to hear all about it.

In 6 Months....

Zac and I will be getting married!

I'll be getting ready with my girls in this room.

Though I'm sure I'll be running around setting things up too. :P

I'll be walking down this aisle with my dad.

Zac will be arriving at the altar with his guys on this boat.

Our guests will watch us say 'I do' from these seats.

We'll dance under these stars....

...Dine at this head table...

...And maybe catch a few private moments under this gazebo.

I can't wait!

Our House

Two years ago today, Zac and I got the keys to our first house. For three years we had been living in an apartment two blocks away from what would soon be our home. When we first started the search for a house we had no idea that it we would be lucky enough to find the perfect one so close by.

Since Zac and I moved in, we've made some changes; things that have made us love our home even more.

One of the first changes we made was to the coat closet in the foyer. When we moved in, it had an accordian style door, two shelves, and a hanging rod. That particular wall was painted green.

I saw a picture online of a mudroom style closet that I loved, so Zac and I started to revamp the coat closet. Zac removed the door, the shelves, and the hanging rod. We painted the inside of the closet a light shade of green while the walls got a few coats of a warm tan color. Zac built a padded bench to take the place of the lower shelf. We purchased three pillows and Zac made three more to be placed on the bench. After adding six hooks along a strip of trim, we finished the closet by adding a wall decal that reads "Breathe, you're home."

Another closet change took place in our office. We decided to transform our third bedroom into an office and since the room had more than one closet we decided to turn one of them into a large built in book case. This is what it looked like when we first moved in:

And this is how it looked after we removed the two sliding doors and added four shelves:

When we first moved in and people saw pictures of our formal sitting room, they thought that we were crazy. It was true, the room needed a lot of help. For starters each wall was a different color. The longest wall was tan, the smalled wall was red, and the third wall was a medium shade of green. What really threw the look of the room off was the dark black color of the fireplace.

Zac and I saw the potential and got to work picking out paint colors to fix the problem. We ended up with a rich, warm tan color. With all the walls sharing a color the room already felt bigger and more inviting. The room really lightened up with the final coats of white paint on the fireplace. After the wedding we plan to finish furnishing our larger living room space and this smaller room will become a sitting room.

The biggest change came in our kitchen. When we moved in the kitchen felt a little cave-ish. The stain on the cabinets was dark and the walls were painted a dark red. The only touches of light color were the white appliances.

You'll see from the photo below that we painted all of our cabinets white to lighten up the space. We also removed the cabinet hanging above the counter. Though we eliminated four cabinet spaces to place dishes it was well worth it to open up the room and create a nice flow from kitchen to informal dining and living spaces. (We repurposed the kitchen cabinets by hanging them in the garage and giving Zac more space to organize his tools.)

From a different point of view you can really see how that red color (and the green color on the larger living room wall in the background). The contrast of the red against the brown tile and dark cabinets really made the space feel small.

Though we don't love the brown tile countertops (which can also be found in all of our bathrooms) it hasn't been high on our priority list of changes to make. Eventually we'll change it out but for now we're working to highlight what we've got. Our new paint color really works with it rather than against it. The tan color of our walls compliments the tile well which makes the tile stick out less.

In the picture above you can see that the trim around the lighting is white. When we first moved in the trim was the same dark stain as the cabinets. (You can kind of see it in the photo below.) We gave the ceiling a fresh coat of white paint and then decided to paint the trim white, too. It did a lot to make the lighting less of a focal point and it no longer felt like the ceiling was going to close in on us.

Compared to the photo above our new kitchen (pictured below) is a much lighter, brighter space. That's not just because the photo is taken in the day with the blinds open. (I realize it's not the fairest of comparisons.)

The white paint on our fireplace, trim, kitchen ceiling, and cabinets have all done wonders to lighten up our space. We're really happy with the changes that we've made to the house, especially to the kitchen.

These pictures were all taken last summer. Since then we've made several more changes to the house including changing out the light fixtures downstairs, hanging up family pictures, and other decor changes. One of these days I'll have to post a video tour to show all of the fun things we've done.

Our Halloween

Hope everyone had a fun Halloween! Zac and I had a great time getting everything together for the event. Last year we didn't do much and as a result we didn't have that many trick or treaters. We decided this year we would carve more than just one pumpkin each and make our walkway look inviting.

Zac got started on hallowing the pumpkins and carving them.

Zac is much better at carving pumpkins that I am. Watching several pumpkin carving competitions inspired Zac to try carving faces into the pumpkins by only shaving off the rinds.

I think it turned out very cool. He also used a chunk of pumpkin to sculpt a nose for his creation. He attached it to the face with a toothpick.

My pumpkin was a little more cute and friendly. I drew out a template for an owl and carefully carved out each piece to create this little guy.

Unfortunately, we carved those two pumpkins a little too early and they fell victim to our still warm central valley temperature. We waited until Halloween day to carve the rest of the pumpkins. On these pumpkins, Zac decided to go more friendly than creepy and he created these funny faces.

The kids really seemed to like these little guys.

We covered the porch with fake spiderwebs, draped cheesecloth style fabric over the window and porch light, hung spiders, placed a pile of foam skulls and bones in the corner, and lined the path with our pumpkin creations and candles.

While the kids got a kick out of the funny face pumpkins, our pumpkin lanterns were a big hit with the grown ups. We used a drill to punch holes into these mini pumpkins and lined them along the our walkway. We loved the way they looked so we've decided that next year we'll make a bunch of them and use them to line the driveway as well.

With the decorating done and plenty of candy, we were ready for the trick or treaters.

This was our Jim's first Halloween. We usually dress him in little sweaters and shirts so he was a good sport about letting us put this little hot dog costume on him. Doesn't he look so adorable? He was a big hit with the trick or treaters. One little boy was so excited to see little Jim his mom literally had to drag him away to head to the next house.

After the first trick or treater came to the door Jim was hooked. He planted himself on the steps by the door and didn't move the whole rest of the night. Jim's never been one to bark when the doorbell rings so he didn't go crazy with each group of kids that stopped by. He was pretty excited however, and we could hear him begin to whine for us to open the door seconds before the doorbell ever rang. (*By the way, our walls are not vibrant yellow :P)

Even when we attempted to lure him away from his spot on the stair with a treat he wouldn't budge. Eventually, as it got later and the trick or treaters stopped, Jim fell asleep.

Jim enjoyed his first Halloween. How was everyone elses?
